Are Your Employees Equipped to Handle Loneliness at Christmas?

As an employer, it is important to assess whether your employees are equipped to handle being on their own during the Christmas period. Ensuring employees have access to mental health resources, evaluating the need for additional support, and regularly checking in on employee wellbeing can help prevent issues related to loneliness. By understanding the impact of the festive period on employee loneliness, organizations can take proactive measures to support their employees with a Christmas action plan.

How Can Employers Promote Wellbeing Among Lonely Staff at Christmas?

We should support people, especially those who are carrying out lone working duties, who may be experiencing feelings of loneliness during the holiday season by creating a sense of community and connection. By encouraging team bonding activities, providing counselling services, and regularly checking in with staff to ensure they feel supported and valued during this time, hr professionals and organizational leaders can play a crucial role. The holiday season is often referred to as the most wonderful time of the year, filled with joy, laughter, and festive celebrations. However, for many people, this time of year can also be accompanied by feelings of misery and isolation. The holiday season, with its emphasis on family, togetherness, and social gatherings, can amplify these feelings especially for those who may not have close relationships or are unable to spend time with loved ones. Our hr professionals and organizational leaders need to intentionally check in with their employees, especially in this unconventional holiday season, to provide the necessary support and guidance. For someone busy with work on a holiday they were hoping to celebrate, it can be easy for them to contrast their situation with friends, family or co-workers who are seemingly having a good time.

It's okay not to be okay

How Do We Begin To Understand Peoples Feelings During December?

Feelings of being lonely as the festive season builds up is not uncommon, with studies showing that a quarter of people experience loneliness, especially during this time of year. New research released by mental health charity Mind suggests that a third of people (36%) are too embarrassed to admit they are lonely at Christmas. For employees, loneliness can have a significant impact on mental health, wellbeing, and work performance. It is important for people in hr organizations to recognize and address this issue, creating a supportive and inclusive environment for their employees. The Impact of Loneliness on Employees can have a profound effect on employee mental health, wellbeing, and overall happiness. The festive season, with its focus on connection and togetherness, can intensify feelings of loneliness, leading to increased feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression. These mental health issues can further impact an employee's ability to perform well at work, causing a decline in productivity, creativity, and engagement.
